This catalog is published on the occasion of the exhibition: Enunciated Life

The California African American Museum - March 27, 2021- August 15, 2021

Curated by Taylor Renee Aldridge

Enunciated Life and its epilogue Inspirited: Coda, utilize Black spiritual beliefs as a point of departure for considering modes of surrender, looking at the movements, sounds, and corporeal expressions that have generated lexicons of communication within and beyond Black church sites.

The exhibition’s title is derived from the scholarship of Ashon T. Crawley, who recognizes the beauty and power of breathing within Black Pentecostalism “to enunciate life, life that is exorbitant, capacious, and fundamentally social, though it is also life that is structured through and engulfed by brutal violence.”[1] Enunciated life, in other words, alerts us to the audaciousness of Black breath that endures in the wake of continued anti-Blackness.

Taylor Renee Aldridge is the visual arts curator and program manager at the California African American Museum (CAAM). Prior, she worked as a writer and independent curator in Detroit, Michigan. In 2015, along with art critic Jessica Lynne, she co-founded ARTS.BLACK, a journal of art criticism for Black perspectives. She has earned a M.L.A from Harvard University with a concentration in Museum Studies and B.A from Howard University with a concentration in Art History.
