Rye, this project offers unprecedented insight into the true legacy of Jefferson’s “self-evident” truths, as observed through a Black lens. And by engaging with experts from a bevy of backgrounds, the essays offer intersectional perspectives on the Black experience, wrestling with what independence might mean for labor organizers, clergy members, queer rights advocates, coalitions of women, and several others. We also experience direct engagement with the complicated legacy of the founding fathers in writing from one of Jefferson’s direct descendants.
