Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas and more broadly, the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that Union soldiers landed at Galveston, TX with news that the Civil War and that enslaved peoples were free. This was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. In America, more than 24 states recognize June 19th as a state holiday or have some official form of observance. In 2021 President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a Federal Holiday.
