A kid and their two moms head to the iconic People’s Beach at Jacob Riis Park for a perfect day of sun, sand, and chosen family in a joyful queer space where every body, every family, and every identity is free, seen, and celebrated.

On the outskirts of the city,
where land meets sea,
there is a magical place my family goes to feel…
CELEBRATED.

Mama, Mom, Bones, and I get to the beach early to claim a spot. At the People's Beach, we never have to invite anyone because friends are always here. There's people dressed up, and people dressed down, and as the day goes on, more and more friends arrive to dance, laugh, and play in the waves.

From Stonewall Honoree A.M. Wild and bestselling illustrator Ash Kwak Lukashevsky, The People's Beach captures the joy of the queer community flourishing in a place where all people can express themselves freely and belong.

A.M. Wild is a queer, nonbinary children's book author based in Brooklyn, NY, with a great passion for places like Riis Beach, where their love of the natural world and queer people come together in one loud and glorious celebration. They are also the author of Not He or She, I'm Me, an American Library Association Stonewall Children’s Honor book. A.M. creates work that centers social justice, uplifts their queer and trans community, and teaches empathy. Ash Kwak Lukashevsky is an illustrator and cultural worker born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, and lives between Honolulu and Los Angeles. Ash sees art as a tool to strengthen social movements for our collective liberation—against imperialism, colonialism, and racial/environmental injustice. Ash has illustrated impactful children’s books to teach on lessons of racial justice, LGBTQIA+ liberation, and climate justice—including #1 New York Times bestselling children’s book Antiracist Baby. In their free time, they love swimming in the ocean, tending to the land, taking dance classes, crafting with their partner, and playing with their beloved rescue dog, Gus Gus.
